Na początku zespół Daughter nie był dużym tworem: w całości tworzyła go Elena Tonra. Potem dołączył do niej gitarzysta Igor Haefeli i wspólnie wydali pierwszy materiał. A nieco później skład powiększył się o Remiego Aguilellę, perkusistę. Na szczęście nowi członkowie zespołowi się przysłużyli, a muzyka nie zatraciła niczego ze swojej intymności.
Daughter to projekt obracający się muzycznie w kręgu folku przyprawionego popem. Poszukiwacze nawet nie muzycznej ekstremy (raczej na blogu o niej nie piszę, więc chyba nikt się jej tutaj nie spodziewa), ale bardziej rockowego brzmienia muszą być przygotowani na całkowicie odmienny nastrój. Dotychczas wydany materiał ma wspólny mianownik i jest nim melancholia, tęsknota za tym, co utracone. Dzieciństwem, miłością, spokojem... Znakomicie ten nastrój do spółki z muzyką buduje głos Eleny, delikatny i łagodny.
Kapela wydała do tej pory całkiem dużo nagrań, jeśli wziąć pod uwagę, że jej historia sięga wyłącznie do 2010 roku. Najpierw dema, potem dwie EP-ki wypuszczone własnym sumptem w 2011 oraz singiel z 2012, już pod skrzydłami 4AD. Wkrótce (w Europie 18 marca, Stany Zjednoczone będą musiały poczekać do kwietnia) ukaże się nareszcie pierwszy album długogrający, zatytułowany "If You Leave". Postanowiłem potraktować tę zapowiedź jako znakomitą okazję, żeby napisać o zespole. Już za sam fakt, że tak długo nic się o nim nie pojawiło, powinienem posypać głowę popiołem. Dlaczego? Powód jest banalny: to dla mnie obecnie jeden z najlepszych zespołów, a ich album jest jednym z najbardziej przeze mnie wyczekiwanych wydawnictw. Zatem po kilka słów o każdym z dotychczasowych wydawnictw, w kolejności chronologicznej.
Pierwsza EP-ka, "His Young Heart", zaczyna się bardzo mocno. Nie dosłownie, oczywiście. Brak tutaj szybkich, agresywnych riffów czy brutalnego bębnienia, muzycznie można mówić o utworach akustycznych. A jednak na poziomie emocjonalnym, ta piosenka pozostawia słuchacza bez tchu. Moim zdaniem żaden z pozostałych (trzech) utworów na EP-ce nie może się równać z "Landfill". Jeśli chcecie posłuchać jednej piosenki, to będzie stanowiła dobry wybór. Całe wydawnictwo wydaje mi się być najspokojniejsze z dotychczas opublikowanych. Cechuje się również największą prostotą - wysmakowaną i elegancką. Znakomicie sprawdza się w słoneczny, zimowy dzień. Zamykający "Switzerland" robi wrażenie bycia otoczonym przez ogromną przestrzeń, co - sądząc po tytule - wydaje się być jak najbardziej na miejscu: ten utwór jest jak spoglądanie z góry i słuchanie echa. Czyli śnieżnych nastrojów ciąg dalszy.
Na "The Wild Youth EP" również składają się cztery utwory. Nie ma tutaj rewolucji stylistycznej, więc osoby, które przekonały się do Daughter wcześniej, mogą być spokojne o swoje doznania. Zarówno od strony zmysłowej, jak i emocjonalnej. Po raz pierwszy wprowadzone zostaje pianino - pojawia się ono w trzecim utworze, "Youth". To zresztą mój ulubiony na tym wydawnictwie. Od pierwszych dźwięków "Home", które EP-kę otwiera, słychać jak istotny dla Daughter pozostał rytm. Akcentowany bębnami, gitarą, zawsze wyraźnie obecny i hipnotyzujący. "The Wild Youth" nie jest już tak prosta, jak jej poprzedniczka, nadal nie mamy jednak do czynienia ze zbędnym przeładowaniem efektami. Pięknym zamknięciem całości jest "Love". Spokojniejszy muzycznie od przedostatniej piosenki, jednak dorównujący jej intensywnością.
Ostatnie co zespół wydał, to singiel "Smother". Jak to w przypadku singla bywa, znajdziemy tutaj mniej utworów niż na EP-kach. Jest utwór tytułowy i jest B-side, "Run". Pierwszy jest bardzo spokojny, łagodny. Wręcz senny. Drugi... Cóż, dla mnie całkowicie przyćmiewa poprzednika. Również spokojny. Mam z nią jedno uporczywe skojarzenie: dla mnie to piosenka o ucieczce Romea i Julii. Oczywiście w alternatywnej wersji ich historii, która nie powstała. Gdyby ktoś ośmielił się nakręcić równie bezczelnie przerobioną wersję, to powinien sięgnąć po ten utwór jako tło finału i napisów. Polecam!
Łatwo można zauważyć, że mam wobec płyty "If You Leave" ogromne oczekiwania. Wszystkie dotychczasowe znaki wskazują, że nie ma powodów, żeby do Daughter podchodzić z podejściem innym niż oczekiwaniem na to, co najlepsze.
I wreszcie na koniec: wszystkie wydawnictwa cechuje zaskakująca dojrzałość w warstwie tekstowej. Jeśli wziąć pod uwagę, że autorka nie ma jeszcze 25 lat, to naprawdę można się zdziwić.

In the beginning Daughter wasn't a big band: it was just Elena Tonra. Some time later Igor Haefeli, guitarist, joined her and together they published first material. A little bit further down the road they met Remi Aguilella, percussionist. Luckily, new bandmates led only to improvement and the music didn't lose any of it's intimacy.
Daughter is a project coming form folk territory, although there's also a lot of pop. Seekers of not even musical extreme (not that I'm writing about it on my blog, so probably no one would expect it here), but simply more rocking sound, have to be prepared for entirely different mood. Everything by Daughter that's been out till today has one thing in common: melancholy, yearning for what's gone. Childhood, love, patience... Such atmosphere is perfectly built by Elena's voice, along with the music.
The band has published not that small amount of songs, if you remember about the fact that their history started back in 2010. First there were demos, then two self released EPs from 2011 and one single in 2012. The last one with help of 4AD. Soon (March, the 18th, in Europe, US will have to wait until April) LP will be finally released, titled 'If You Leave'. I decided to make this information a perfect opportunity to write about Daughter. I'm already ashamed, that I haven't written anything about them yet. Why? Well, the truth is trivial: they're one of my favourite band nowadays and their debut is one of those albums, that expect the most. So I'm going to write just a few words about each of releases, that we already had a chance to hear. In chronological order.
The first EP, 'His Young Heart', starts with a hit. Not literally, of course. There are no fast, aggressive riffs or brutal drumming - when it comes to music, we can call them acoustic. However on the emotional level, the song leaves listener breathless. In my opinion it's the best one here. If you want to pick one song from each title in their discography, then you should listen to 'Landfill". 'His Young Heart' seems to be the most calm of all releases. It's also the most simple of them: simple, but elegant and sophisticated. It's a perfect choice for sunny winter day. Closing track, 'Switzerland', gives you the impression of being surrounded by great space. Like standing on top of the mountain, looking down and listening to echo, so (when you look at the title again) everything seems to be in it's right place.
'The Wild Youth EP' is also four tracks long. There is no revolution in here. People who got convinced by Daughter before, can keep calm about their experiences. Both sensual and emotional. On this release we can hear piano for the first time, in song 'Youth'. I have to admit that this is my favourite track here. Right from the first sounds of opening track, 'Home', listener is confronted with the fact that rhytm is still very important to the band. Sometimes it is emphasized by drums, sometimes by guitar, but it's always present and hypnotizing. 'The Wild Youth' is not as simple, as previous EP, but there is still no possibility to even mention any sort of overload. 'Love' is a beautiful closing track. Calmer than it's predecessor and yet, equal to it when it comes to intensity.
The last release was single 'Smother'. As it usually is, we can find here only two songs. Title track and b-side, 'Run'. The first one is very calm and quiet. I'd even say it's sleepy. The second... Well, entirely outshines previous track. There's one association that I keep thinking of, when I hear 'Run': to me it's a song about Romeo and Juliet on a run. That is, of course, in alternative version of their history, where decide for runaway. If someone will ever decide to direct such daring story, then he or she should pick this song as background for grand finale. Highly recommended!
As you can easily see, 'If You Leave' will have to meet really high expectations in my case. In my opinion they're justified.
And one last thing: all of the releases are surprisingly mature from their lyrical side. If you know about the fact, that their author isn;t even 25 years old, you can really be taken by surprise.
For all the fans of numbers and such - each of these releases alone and all together: 8/10
