Tegoroczna płyta Heartless Bastards, czyli "Arrow", jest już - o ile mi wiadomo - czwartą w ich dorobku. Przyznaję się, że jest równocześnie pierwszą, którą miałem okazję usłyszeć. Jednak wygląda na to, że nie będzie ostatnią. Nie przy jakości materiału, jaki został na niej nagrany.
Heartless Bastards stawia na rockowe brzmienie. I słychać w nim, że jest to wybór podyktowany wyłącznie potrzebą serca, niczym innym. A dokładniej - potrzebą serca Eriki Wennerstrom, która jest autorką wszystkich piosenek nagranych na "Arrow". Równocześnie jest gitarzystką i wokalistką zespołu. I właśnie jej głos jest jednym z najbardziej interesujących punktów płyty. O charakterystycznej, jakby zachrypniętej barwie, pełen emocji. Niewątpliwie to jeden z największych atutów Heartless Bastards, jeśli nie największy. Gdy autorka śpiewa "Well the arrow killed the beast/That is burnin' inside of me" w "The Arrow Killed the Beast" albo "And the hour is getting late" w "Down in the Canyon" ciarki an grzbiecie są często towarzyszącym uczuciem.
Muzycznie Erika Wennerstrom czerpie z tradycji garage rocka i bluesa. Słychać tutaj też spuściznę folku ("Low Low Low") czy glamu ("Got to Have Rock and Roll", który mógłby trafić z powodzeniem na album T. Rex). Z kolei trwający sześć i pół minuty "The Arrow Killed the Beast" byłby całkowicie na miejscu na ścieżce dźwiękowej spaghetti westernu Sergia Leone. Dźwięk wywołujący skojarzenia z pustynią, brakiem ludzi, słońcem. Wbrew pozorom na albumie nie panuje chaos. Są momenty bardziej żywe, pulsujące, błyszczące, są też chwile wyciszenia. Ale stylistycznie całość jest do siebie znakomicie dopasowana. Dobrze, że zamykający album "Down in the Canyon" trwa siedem i pół minuty - tak solidna porcja na pożegnanie nie pozwala na niedosyt.
Warto posłuchać, jeśli ktoś lubi rockowe, tradycyjne granie.

Album released by Heartless Bastards this year - 'Arrow' - is, as far as I know, their fourth record. I must admit that it's also the first one I've heard. However it looks like it's not going to be the last one. Not with the quality of this release.
Heartless Bastards puts emphasis on rock sound. And you can here that it's a choice of heart, not of anything else. A choice of Erika Wennerstrom's heart, to be exact, as she's the author of all of the songs on 'Arrow'. At the same time she's guitarist and vocalist of the band. And it's her voice, that is one of the most intriguing points of album. Characteristic, hoarse timbre, filled with emotion. Definitely one of the biggest, if not the biggest - assets of Heartless Bastards. When the author sings 'Well the arrow killed the beast/That is burnin' inside of me" in 'The Arrow Killed the Beast' or 'And the hour is getting late" in 'Down in the Canyon' goose bumps are a common reaction.
Music by Erika Wennerstrom draws a lot from the tradition of garage rock and blues. You can hear here also echoes of folk ('Low Low Low') or glam ('Got to Have Rock and Roll', which might be successfully released by T.Rex). 'The Arrow Killed the Beast', which lasts for six and a half minutes, might be put on sound track from Sergio Leone's spagetthi werstern. It's sound brings to listener pictures of desert, sun, lack of men. However the CD isn't in any way chaotic. There are moments more shining, full of life, pulsating, there are also calm, but the whole is coherent and matches up. It's great that 'Down in the Canyon', serving as closer to entire album, is seven and a half minutes long - so big portion of great music as a goodbye can't leave you with a feeling of shortage.
It's really worth a listen if you're into rock, traditional music.
